Authorities Saturday were trying to determine why a scary grenade turned up on family friendly Dockweiler State Beach in Playa del Rey just under the flight path for departing jets from LAX.
The grenade was “diffused” by police bomb experts with no injuries, but the device raised worries as Dockweiler draws hundreds of beach goers every night to its 75 firepits for bonfires on the sand.
The device was turned in to lifeguards at 12:35 p.m. Friday, according to the lifeguard division of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. That’s just before the crush of people were expected for the weekend starting Friday evening.
A Los Angeles Police Department bomb squad “diffused the grenade with no injuries,” lifeguards said.
It was not immediately clear if the grenade posed a risk of detonation. There was no word of the type of grenade or how long it may have been in the sand before being found.
