A design contest to create an official seal for the city of San Jacinto got underway Thursday, and residents of all ages were encouraged to submit ideas.

The San Jacinto City Council directed that the contest run until June 2, after which the artwork proposals will be judged by the council.

“What better way to embody what makes San Jacinto great than by having an official City Seal designed by our own residents?,” Mayor Russ Utz said. “This contest is an opportunity for San Jacinto residents to use their creativity to design a seal that will be used on official documents, activities and facilities throughout the city.”

Seal art must be circular and contain the phrase “Seal of San Jacinto,” or “City of San Jacinto,” as well as either of the following: “Incorporated 1888,” or “Incorporated April 20, 1888.”

Officials said the proposed seals should highlight aspects of the municipality’s history, geography, assets, milestones, goals and aspirations.

The winning entry will receive high marks for “originality, design and content,” according to the city. Artistic talent is not a criterion.

The individual whose proposal is chosen will receive a certificate of commendation from the council and invited to be recognized during a meeting.

Entries can be submitted electronically to Cynthia Espinosa in the Office of the City Manager, cespinosa@sanjacintoca.gov, or physically mailed to her at San Jacinto Office of the City Manager, 595 S. San Jacinto Ave., San Jacinto 92583.
