An electrical malfunction Friday sparked a fire that forced the evacuation of a two-story Grantville-area apartment building and left three residents in need of emergency lodging, but nobody was hurt.
The blaze in the 6200 block of Holabird Street, just east of Mission Gorge Road, erupted shortly before 9:30 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
Firefighters arrived to find flames spreading through a single apartment unit, SDFRD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said. While dousing the blaze, crews cleared residents out of the building and requested two Metropolitan Transit System buses to help the displaced people get to shelter, she said.
The American Red Cross was called in to help the three adults who live in the damaged rental unit arrange for temporary housing.
The exact cause of the fire was under investigation.
