Fire spread quickly through a vacant home in the Pico-Union area Tuesday morning before firefighters were able to extinguish the flames.
Crews went to 1218 S. Arapahoe Street, near Pico Boulevard and Hoover Street, at 2:08 a.m. and found heavy fire coming from the home, according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
About 2:30 a.m., the fire was declared a greater alarm fire with 94 firefighters assigned, she said.
The approximately 2,300-square-foot Victorian home was built in 1900. Its balloon-style construction allowed the fire to move quickly up the walls, Stewart said.
Balloon style construction uses long vertical wood frames that extend from the foundation to the roof.
A knockdown was called at 2:46 a.m., she said.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was under investigation.
