The Los Angeles Chargers concluded preseason play Saturday evening with a 27-0 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, extending their scoreless streak to six quarters and 10 possessions.
The Chargers returned to their quarterback rotation from their preseason opener Aug. 14, with Chase Daniel getting the start.
On the sixth play, facing a third-and-seven from their 29-yard line, Daniel was sacked by linebacker Cody Barton, the ball went into the air, was grabbed by free safety Marquise Blair who ran 17 yards for the touchdown.
Easton Stick, who is competing with Daniel to be the backup behind Justin Herbert, entered the game in the second possession, when the Chargers were forced to punt after three plays.
Daniel played the next two possessions. The first ended with a punt after seven plays, including two first downs. The second ended with Tristan Vizcaino missing a 47-yard field goal attempt wide right after the Chargers picked up four first downs and drove to Seattle’s 19-yard line, their deepest penetration
Daniel completed nine of 12 passes for 70 yards for an 88.9 passer rating and was sacked twice. Daniel is beginning his 12th season in the NFL and first with the Chargers.
Stick played the final five possessions. The first ended with the Chargers (1-2) turning the ball over on downs at their 44-yard line, the next three with punts and the fifth with time expiring.
The Chargers did not cross midfield in the second half. Their longest play in the second half was a 14-yard pass from Stick to receiver Michael Bandy. Their longest play in the first half was a 16-yard pass from Daniel to Tyron Johnson.
Stick completed 10 of 17 passes for 76 yards for a 69.7 passer rating and was sacked three times. Stick was the Chargers’ fifth-round choice in the 2019 NFL draft out of North Dakota State. His regular-season experience consists of two plays in 2020, including a 4-yard pass.
The Chargers were outgained 285 yards to 159, and trailed 20-11 in first downs and 33:56-26:04 in time of possession before a crowd at Lumen Field announced at 68,003. The Chargers were penalized 10 times for 93 yards, Seattle nine times for 80 yards.
Both Seahawks (1-2) quarterbacks guided the team to a touchdown and a field goal.
Geno Smith completed 11 of 15 passes for passes for 90 yards and an 88.2 passer rating. Alex Collins ran 5 yards for a touchdown on Seattle’s second possession and Jason Myers kicked a 30-yard field goal on their third.
Smith played for the Chargers in 2018, completing one of four passes for 8 yards in four games.
Myers kicked a 33-yard field goal on Sean Mannion’s second series at quarterback, the only points in the third quarter. Mannion threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to rookie receiver Darece Robinson on his third series, a 16-play, 87-yard drive that consumed eight minutes, 38 seconds.
Mannion completed 13 of 15 passes for 77 yards and one touchdown and a 110.3 passer rating. He was sacked twice.
The passer rating is on a scale from zero to 158.3 based on completion percentage, yards per attempt, touchdowns per attempt and interceptions per attempt.
