A Torrance man was struck and killed by a car as he crossed a street, authorities said Monday.
The pedestrian was identified as Ryoichi Kobayashi, 63, according to the coroner’s office. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The California Highway Patrol first indicated the crash was a hit-and-run, but that was not indicated in a subsequent press release.
The crash was reported at 8:05 p.m. on the eastbound side of Torrance Boulevard east of Conradi Avenue, according to CHP Officer M. Fatela, who investigated at the scene.
The preliminary investigation indicated a 36-year-old Torrance woman was driving a 2019 Toyota eastbound on Torrance Boulevard and had just passed the intersection with Conradi Avenue. She was moving at 35 mph in lane 1.
That is when Kobayashi was walking from the north edge of Torrance Boulevard to cross to the south edge and was struck by the Toyota, Fabela said.
The investigation into the crash continued, the officer said.
