“Scream” is the first installment in the horror film saga since 2011, and stars franchise regulars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette along with a cast of younger actors.
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” was still a strong second with $20.8 million Friday through Sunday at theaters in the United States and Canada, Comscore reported. The superhero film had topped the box office for its first four weeks, and has earned more than $698 million domestically to become one of the highest grossing films of all time.
The animated film “Sing 2” was in third place with $8.2 million in its fourth week of release.
“The 355” was fourth with $2.34 million, followed by “The King’s Man” with $2.31 million.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “Belle” ($1.64 million), “American Underdog” ($1.6 million), “West Side Story” ($948,000), “Licorice Pizza” ($900,000) and “The Matrix Resurrections” ($815,000).
