A man died Saturday when his pickup rear-ended a van on the San Diego (405) Freeway in North Hills.
The crash occurred about 10:10 a.m. on the northbound freeway at the Nordhoff Street off-ramp, according to California Highway Patrol Officer F. Vargas.
The 52-year-old Reseda man was driving a 1997 Toyota pickup in the No. 3 lane, Vargas said. A 38-year-old North Hollywood man was slowing his 2013 Chevrolet work van due to stopped traffic ahead.
The pickup crashed into the van because the Reseda man could not slow down enough “due to his unsafe speed for the prevailing traffic,” Vargas said.
Paramedics pronounced the Toyota driver dead at the scene, the officer said. The van driver suffered minor injuries but was not taken to a hospital for treatment.
The Nordhoff Street off-ramp and lanes 2, 3 and 4 lanes of the northbound 405 were closed for about three hours for the investigation.
