The historic Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro will close Monday for a major renovation project that’s expected to last two years, officials said Saturday.
The theater was originally slated to close for remodeling on June 30, but after reviewing the plans, City Councilman Tim McOsker worked with the Bureau of Engineering and Department of Cultural Affairs to keep it open through the holiday season, according to McOsker’s office.
“The Warner Grand Theatre is a community arts hub for the Harbor area. It’s important to me that we work diligently to make these needed improvements and bring the theater back and better than ever for Harbor residents and visitors,” McOsker said.
The venue at 478 W. Sixth St. was opened in 1931, one of three art deco movie places built by Warner Bros. studio in the Los Angeles area. It’s owned and operated by the city’s Department of Cultural Affairs, which operates the facility as a low-cost rental house for artists and companies from around the city, and for use by local community groups and partners.
“We are excited to partner with the Bureau of Engineering to begin the process of restoring this historical landmark and enhancing accessibility to the Warner Grand Theatre for both the San Pedro and larger Los Angeles communities,” said Daniel Tarica, general manager of the Department of Cultural Affairs.
The storefront businesses facing Sixth Street, Sacred Grounds Coffee Cafe and fINdings Art Center, will remain open and accessible through the end of June 2024, officials said.
Construction is expected to be completed at the end of 2025.
