Residents of eight units of a San Pedro apartment building were ordered to evacuate for precautionary reasons Tuesday evening after firefighters detected higher-than-normal levels of carbon monoxide.

All the evacuated units were on the top floor of a four-story apartment building in the 3600 block of South Pacific Avenue, near 36th Street, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Nicholas Prange.

“Several residents were evaluated and released on scene,” Prange said. “Firefighters will ventilate the area and ensure readings are normal before clearing the scene.”

The third-floor readings were stable, but residents were urged to remain inside their units while firefighters conducted their investigation, Prange said.

Firefighters responded to the building around 6:50 p.m. Tuesday, Prange said.

It was unclear what caused the high levels of carbon monoxide on the fourth floor, and an investigation remains ongoing.
