To mark Arbor Day, the city of Perris Friday will plant a Fuji apple tree at the Community Garden, and public works personnel will give away one fruit tree per household with proof of residency.

The tree planting will take place at 135 North D St. Perris residents will receive one tree per household, while supplies last, from 7-11 a.m. and from 2-4 p.m. at 101 North D St.

“The city recognizes the importance of community trees and encourages tree planning and care,” the city said in a statement.

“Some of the immediate benefits of trees are, they purify our air and combat climate change, provide housing to millions of species that protect us from disease, cool our streets and cities and ease the mind during stressful times.”

Arbor Day is a centuries-long tradition that celebrates the preservation and planting of trees.
