The California Highway Patrol Sunday confirmed that a man riding a motorcycle fatally shot a 19-year-old motorist on the San Bernardino (10) Freeway near San Dimas.

CHP officers were called to the eastbound freeway at the Via Verde Drive exit around 2:16 a.m. Saturday, where they found a white Chevy Camaro on the right shoulder of the freeway, Officer Sean Lough said.

Officers attempted to perform life-saving measures on the man prior to the arrival of Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics, who pronounced him dead at the scene.

The victim was later identified as Alexander Espino of Bloomington, according to the Los Angeles County Office of Medical Examiner and the CHP.

The CHP’s investigation revealed that a suspect riding a black Harley-Davidson style motorcycle began shooting at the passenger side of the Camaro, striking Espino.

“A male passenger in the Camaro was not struck and helped steer the Camaro to the offramp of Via Verde (Drive), where he then called 911 to report the incident,” according to a CHP statement.

Video footage from the scene showed what appeared to be a bullet hole on the right side of the Camaro’s windshield.

No description of the shooter was immediately available, and the investigation was continuing Sunday.

Anyone with information about the case was urged to call the CHP’s Baldwin Park station at 626-338-1164. After-hours calls can be directed to 323-259-3200. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or visit lacrimestoppers.org.
