Firearm vendors selling to Los Angeles County departments will be required to certify under penalty of perjury that they are in compliance with all federal, state and local firearm regulations after a Board of Supervisors vote Tuesday.
The vendors will also be required to confirm that they have not been cited for repeated or serious violations and to notify the county of any future citations.
“Research shows a correlation between (a Federal Firearm Licensee’s) violation of firearms laws and the likelihood that a gun purchased from that vendor is recovered in a crime,” according to the original motion from July 2024. “Of the gun dealers that supplied almost 60% of crime guns nationwide, 75% had violated federal law.”
On July 9, Supervisors Janice Hahn and Hilda Solis directed the county’s Internal Services Department to outline and propose a purchasing process, and the motion passed Tuesday adopts that process.
Tuesday’s follow-up motion called the move a “commitment to public safety and the reduction in gun trafficking and gun-related crimes.”
“When gun dealers violate our laws and regulations, they’re choosing profit over the lives and safety of our communities. Not one cent of LA County taxpayer money should go into their pockets,” Hahn said.
