The city of Glendale will open four cooling centers Friday to provide relief from the extreme heat expected across Southern California.
The cooling centers will operate at the Adult Recreation Center, 201 E. Colorado St.; Pacific Park & Community Center, 501 S. Pacific Ave.; Maple Park Community Center, 820 E. Maple St.; and Sparr Heights Community Center, 1613 Glencoe Way, according to city officials.
The Adult Recreation Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Pacific Park & Community Center and Maple Park Community Center will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., while Sparr Heights Community Center will operate from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.
City officials encouraged anyone without access to a cool place during the hottest part of the day to use the facilities. Pets will be permitted but must remain on a leash.
Officials also reminded residents that Pacific Community Pool will be open daily for recreational swimming, while splash pads at Pacific Park and Cerritos Park will operate daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Residents planning to spend time outdoors were urged to drink plenty of water, limit strenuous activity, wear lightweight clothing and seek shade whenever possible. Officials also advised checking on older adults, young children and pets during the heat wave.
