Los Angeles County Lifeguards made more than 700 ocean rescues last weekend, quite a few less than the nearly 2,000 performed the previous week, but still plenty to keep crews busy.
The public heeded warnings to check with lifeguards and to swim only where one is stationed as strong but diminishing surf continued to come ashore, said Lifeguards Capt. Pono Barnes.
“The surf definitely calmed down a bit,” he said, adding that predictions of 4- to 8-foot waves turned out to be overly optimistic for surfers.
Still, Barnes said, 721 ocean rescues between Friday and Sunday still made for a busy weekend.
Media reports of the more treacherous conditions the prior weekend seemed to have an effect on beachgoers, he said.
