Authorities are searching for a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed three 13-year-old girls in a crosswalk Friday as they were trick-or-treating for Halloween in Santa Ana.

The suspect’s vehicle, a Honda CRV, was found in a nearby parking lot, covered by a tarpaulin, with extensive damage to the front end.

The crash occurred at 6:45 p.m. Friday in the 1400 block of East Fairhaven Avenue, near the intersection with Jacaranda Street, said Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.

Two of the girls were twins, Capt. Steve Concialdi of the Orange County Fire Authority said.

All three victims died at the scene, Concialdi said.

The suspect’s vehicle was speeding westbound on Fairhaven Avenue with two male occupants, police said.

Detailed descriptions of the suspects were not made available.

A news photographer at the scene said the Honda was found in a parking lot behind a Big Lots store at Fairhaven and Grand Avenue.

Santa Ana Police Department Chief Carlos Rojas said police believed the Honda was the suspect’s vehicle.

A witness to the accident asked the suspects to turn themselves in an NBC4 interview.

“I know they were scared,” the witness said of the suspects, “they had to be, because of the way the car looked.

“There’s a lot of people out here that are hurting.”
