The Orange County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved relocating the Social Services Agency from its offices in Santa Ana to a new home in Orange.

The agency has leased its headquarters at 888 N. Main St. in Santa Ana since 1997. However, officials wanted to move because the Main Street building needs numerous repairs and they felt the building at 500 N. State College Blvd. in Orange was a better fit.

The owner of the Santa Ana building offered a lengthy lease extension that included major repairs and renovation of its elevators and heating and air conditioning system. Those types of major repairs won’t be necessary at the building in Orange, officials say.

“The proposed move to the State College Building will eliminate the inconvenience and business disruption from occupancy during major building repairs at the Main Street Building, and provide the opportunity to update an almost 30-year-old space design to take advantage of more modern and efficient space design concepts impractical to do at the Main Street Building,” officials said in a report to supervisors.

The building in Orange is “more centrally located” to most of the agency’s facilities such as the Orangewood Children and Family Center, Juvenile Court at the Lamoreaux Justice Center in Orange, according to officials.

The vote was 4-0 for the move, with one of the board’s seats vacant because of the resignation of Supervisor Janet Nguyen, who was elected to the state Senate.
