A 24-year-old man was behind bars Friday on suspicion of sexually assaulting and stabbing his estranged wife in the head following an argument in her Santa Ana apartment, police said.

Luis Javier Cervantes was waiting for the woman early Wednesday in her apartment in the 1600 block of North Parton Street when she saw him and they got into an argument about their strained marriage, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

His wife had put their 6- and 7-year-old children to bed before the alleged assault, Bertagna said.

The victim told police her husband sexually assaulted her and then stabbed her in the head, Bertagna said.

Cervantes then allegedly stole the victim’s car after he told her he wanted to commit “suicide by cop,” according to Bertagna.

Police later recovered the victim’s car in Anaheim about 7 a.m. Wednesday, Bertagna said.

The investigation led police to Fullerton, where Cervantes was arrested about 6:45 p.m. Thursday.

Cervantes was being held without bail in Orange County Jail.
