A car crashed into a concrete light pole and then flipped over Monday, killing one person and leaving another hospitalized with serious injuries, police reported.

The single-car crash occurred on southbound Jamboree Road about 12:20 p.m., said Jennifer Manzella of the Newport Beach Police Department. All southbound lanes of Jamboree were closed at Santa Barbara Drive four about four hours.

The Miata’s driver — his name was not immediately released — was pronounced dead at the scene. The female passenger’s injuries were serious, but not life-threatening, Manzella said.

The cause of the accident was under investigation.
