A family dog tried unsuccessfully to save a 9-month-old child from drowning in a backyard swimming pool in Irvine.
The mother found the child submerged in the water at 5:30 p.m. Saturday a their home in the 5000 block of Carver. She tried CPR before paramedics arrived and transported the child to Hoag Hospital, according to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi.
The child, whose name and gender were not released, was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
Concialdi said it appeared the family German Shepherd tried to pull the child from the water, but was unsuccessful.
The 9-month-old was the seventh child to drown in Orange County within the past 30 days, Concialdi said. Out of 25 suspected drowning calls this year, he said 14 have been fatal.
In 2014, the department handled 86 such calls, including 43 that were fatal.
Orange County has “an abundance” of backyard swimming pools, but many are not protected by isolation fences with locks and other barriers to keep children safe, Concialdi said.
