A 36-year-old Newport Beach man turned himself in to authorities in connection with a hit-and-run accident that landed a 14-year-old girl on a bicycle in the hospital fighting for her life, police said.

Anthony Michael George turned himself in about 2 p.m. Wednesday, according to Newport Beach Police Lt. Jeff Brouwer.

George was booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run after he was questioned by investigators, Brouwer said.

The incident happened about 9:20 p.m. Tuesday near East Bay and Anade avenues, according to Jennifer Manzella of the Newport Beach Police Department.

The girl, whose name was not released, was taken to an area hospital, where she was listed in critical condition, Manzella said. The teen lives in San Carlos, in San Mateo County.

The girl, who was not wearing a helmet, was riding a beach cruiser-type bicycle with a group of other bike riders when she was hit by a silver or white Mercedes-Benz, Manzella said.

Anyone with information relevant to the investigation was asked to call investigator Dave Darling at (949) 644-3746.
