Stretches of Huntington State Beach and Newport Beach closed because of a shark sighting were reopened Friday morning.

However, an advisory remains in effect until about 3:30 p.m. warning swimmers to be cautious, a state beach representative said.

The affected areas range from a mile south of Brookhurst Street to 56th Street in Newport Beach, and a mile north to Newland Street in Huntington Beach.

The closure was ordered Thursday afternoon after a 6-foot-8-inch shark bumped the surfboard of an off-duty lifeguard and lifted him about a foot out of the water, according to the OC Register.
