A big rig veered off a freeway in Garden Grove on Monday afternoon and slammed into two apartment buildings, injuring the driver, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 3:10 p.m. on Haster Street just north of Garden Grove Boulevard, Capt. Thanh Nguyen of the Garden Grove Fire Department said.

The trucker was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, but his condition was not available, Nguyen said.

The big rig apparently came off the westbound Garden Grove (22) Freeway at the Haster Street off-ramp, went through the intersection of Haster and Garden Grove Boulevard, then struck the two-story apartment buildings, badly damaging at least two units, Nguyen said.

No one in the buildings was injured, but 16 apartment units were deemed uninhabitable due to either structural compromise or utility issues, Nguyen said.

The Red Cross responded to assist those displaced with finding temporary shelter, he said.
