A man in his early 70s ignited a fire by placing the nasal tube used for his oxygen tank at his side, and then lighting a cigarette.

The combination of the oxygen and the cigarette spark ignited an open flame that spread to the carpet, and then extended through the home in the 29000 block of Silverado Canyon Road.

But the man escaped with only minor smoke inhalation injuries in the fire, which $100,000 damage to the structure and $20,000 to its contents, said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi.

Firefighters were dispatched at 12:15 a.m. and had the fire under control by 12:45 a.m., Concialdi said.

“He had no working smoke alarms in his home,” he said.

Paramedics rushed the man to Chapman Global Medical Center for treatment of minor smoke inhalation, he said.
