He was sentenced Monday to 10 years in federal prison for possession of child pornography — his third conviction for the same offense.
James Gregory O’Neill, 58, was also ordered by U.S. District Judge R. Gary Klausner to serve 10 years of supervised release, including mental health treatment and computer monitoring, following his release from prison.
O’Neill declined to make a statement to the court.
He pleaded guilty in January in Los Angeles to having almost 100 images of child porn on a memory card on his cell phone, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
O’Neill was previously convicted in 2003 of child porn possession and sentenced to 40 months in prison. He was convicted again in 2011 in Riverside County Superior Court.
“Despite being convicted twice previously for possessing child pornography, Mr. O’Neill continued to victimize children by creating a market for child pornography,” said U.S. Attorney Eileen M. Decker. “It is one of the highest priorities of my office to prosecute those who would seek to victimize children, and in particular those who do so repeatedly.”
Because O’Neill had twice before been convicted of possessing child porn, he faced a 10-year mandatory minimum prison term — and could have been sentenced to as much as 20 years, prosecutors noted.
