A 38-year-old suspect in the fatal stabbing of a man and the kidnapping and stabbing of a girlfriend was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday on probation violations for domestic violence convictions.

Teodoro Bernal Nunez was booked on suspicion of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, false imprisonment and violating a court order in connection with the fatal stabbing in the 1200 block of South Oak Street about 1:30 a.m. Saturday, according to Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.

Nunez was being held without bail, Bertagna said.

The 27-year-old man was found stabbed on the front lawn of a residence on that block and pronounced dead at the scene, Bertagna said.

“We were out there earlier that day when he tried to kidnap her,” Bertagna alleged of Nunez. “Obviously, he was gone when we got there and we started our investigation. Later that night he comes and commits the murder and kidnaps her.”

Bertagna said he did not know the victim’s name.

The woman was expected to survive her injuries but remained hospitalized Monday, Bertagna said.

Nunez was arrested following a traffic stop in Brea.

Nunez pleaded guilty Dec. 1 to battering a woman he was dating on Aug. 8. He also pleaded guilty on that same day to another incident of battering a woman he was living with on Nov. 28.

“I did knowingly, willfully, and unlawfully inflict corporal injury resulting in a traumatic condition upon Jane Doe, who I was cohabitating with and in a dating relationship at the time,” Nunez said in his guilty plea form.

In both cases Nunez was sentenced to eight days in jail and placed on three years of informal probation. He was also ordered to participate in a treatment program for domestic violence defendants.

It was not immediately known if the victim in the misdemeanor cases was the same as the woman stabbed this weekend.

Nunez was prohibited from contacting the victim in the Aug. 8 and Nov. 28 incidents, and the woman in Saturday’s attack had a restraining order against Nunez, Bertagna said.
