The driver of a Toyota pickup truck was killed and two pedestrians — including a 3-year-old boy — were struck and injured when the vehicle flew off the Foothill Transportation Corridor (241) toll road in Lake Forest, authorities said.
The accident was reported about 9:50 p.m. Sunday on the northbound Foothill Transportation Corridor north of Bake Parkway, according to California Highway Patrol Officer P. Bourassa.
The 28-year-old driver of the 2003 Toyota Tundra was ejected when his truck turned to the right and went off the east side of the road, struck a dirt embankment and became airborne, Bourassa said.
“The pickup then landed in the adjacent parking lot of 26602 Towne Center Drive, in Foothill Ranch, striking a fire hydrant, several parked vehicles and two pedestrians,” the officer said.
Driver John Weathers of Lake Forest was pronounced dead at the scene, Bourassa said. Fifty-year-old Jeffrey Werkmeister and a 3-year-old child, also of Lake Forest, were taken to Mission Hospital with major injuries.
“DUI does not appear to be a factor,” Bourassa said. The crash remained under investigation.
