The Disneyland Resort Wednesday announced a May 27 opening date for its “Guardians of the Galaxy” attraction, which replaces the Twilight Zone-themed Tower of Terror ride in the Disney California Adventure park.

The ride, called the “Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: Breakout,” will feature characters from the hit 2014 James Gunn-directed movie based on the Marvel Comics series, and its opening coincides with the May 5 debut of Gunn’s sequel film, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.”

Visitors will “help Rocket bust his pals out of the Collector’s Fortress,” according to Disneyland’s blog.

The attraction will also include randomized ride experiences, complete with new visual and audio effects and music inspired by the popular film’s soundtrack, according to Disney.

The ride occupies the Art Deco-hotel-styled building that once housed the Tower of Terror ride, which seated visitors in an elevator-shaped room that dropped and ascended randomly. The building is currently undergoing construction to re-theme it to match the colorful outer-space look and feel of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” feature film.

The Marvel-themed ride’s opening is part of a broader expansion of Marvel superhero activities at Disney California Adventure under the banner “Summer of Heroes,” which begins May 27 and runs through Sept. 10.

Activities will include encounters with park personnel playing “Guardians” and “Avengers” characters such as Star-Lord, Black Widow, Spider-Man, Hawkeye and Captain America; a “Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Dance Off!” dance party; an “Avengers Training Initiative” that will give children a chance to engage in games with the characters Black Widow and Hawkeye; and superhero-themed merchandise and food in California Adventure’s Hollywood Land.
