
The victim of a pre-dawn fatal stabbing in Costa Mesa allegedly by a woman was described by his friends and family as a “super nice guy,” according to a prosecutor.
Derek Valentine, 32, of Costa Mesa, was stabbed to death Saturday morning in his residence at 610 Shasta Lane, according to the Orange County Coroner’s Office.
A 21-year-old woman was charged Thursday with murder in the fatal stabbing of a man in Costa Mesa.
Amber Joy Angelovic, who was being held on $1 million bail and listed her occupation in jail records as “sales,” was expected to be arraigned March 24. She was charged Tuesday with murder with a sentencing enhancement allegation for the personal use of a deadly weapon.
“Everybody says he was a great guy,” said Senior Deputy District Attorney Matt Murphy. “He was described as super nice.”
Angelovic is accused of fatally stabbing Valentine shortly after 5 a.m. He was pronounced dead at 5:50 a.m., according to the coroner.
Authorities said all of the victim’s relatives have not been notified.
Angelovic was arrested at the scene of the two-story apartment building.
According to her website, Angelovic lives in Huntington Beach. She graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in business. She studied “psychology of personality, social psychology,” according to the website.
She notes on the site, “Because of my drive, I completed my degree in 3 1/2 years with a GPA of 3.8.”
Angelovic also said she has experience as an “activities director and surf instructor,” worked as a saleswoman for Galati Yacht Sales in Florida and has also worked as a nanny.
