Police Sunday were trying to figure out why a pedestrian was walking in the street when he was struck and killed by a van in Costa Mesa.

It happened about 2 p.m. Saturday on Harbor Boulevard at Date Place, Costa Mesa Police Lt. Greg Scott said.

The man was walking in southbound lanes when he was struck by the van, Scott said. The van’s driver stopped and cooperated with police.

The injured man was treated at the scene and taken to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana where he died, the lieutenant said.

The incident remained under investigation, Scott said.

The Harbor Boulevard off-ramp from the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway was shut down for the on-scene investigation, according to the California Highway Patrol.
