A man wielding a knife and approaching an officer was shot and killed by police in an officer-involved shooting in Newport Beach, a police sergeant said Sunday.
Officers were dispatched at 9:11 p.m. Saturday to the 200 block of 61st Street in response to a report of an in-progress domestic violence incident and a suspect that had armed himself with a knife, said Newport Beach police Sgt. Ryan Peters.
A police officer arrived at the scene and contacted the suspect, who was outside on the sidewalk and armed with a knife, Peters said.
“Although initially compliant with the officer’s orders to drop the weapon, the suspect re-armed himself with the knife seconds later,” he said. “The suspect then exhibited threatening actions towards the officer. Fearing for his safety and the safety of others, the officer fired at the suspect.”
Paramedics rushed the suspect to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he later died from his gunshot wound, he said.
“Fire department personnel also treated the victim of the domestic violence incident at the scene, before transporting her to a local hospital for additional treatment,” Peters said. “No officers were injured during the incident.”
