A 52-acre brush fire broke out Wednesday afternoon in San Clemente, near Camp Pendleton, but crews quickly got the upper hand.
The “La Pata” fire was reported just before 1:40 p.m. at the end of Avenida Pico between San Clemente and the Marine base in northern San Diego County.
Firefighters were in “mop-up mode” by 4:30 p.m., according to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Larry Kurtz, who said the fire’s progress was stopped about 3 p.m.
Flames “came within a half-mile from some homes, but the fire was burning away from the homes so there no evacuation orders issued,” Kurtz said.
About 75 OCFA and Camp Pendleton firefighters, two air tankers and two helicopters attacked the blaze, which was “pretty close” to another one that broke out in the area last week, Kurtz said.
No injuries were reported.
