A motorist was in custody Thursday after leading an officer on a chase in Garden Grove and barreling into a traffic signal, splitting his Cadillac CTS in two but suffering only minor injuries, police said.
A patrol officer was conducting traffic enforcement along Brookhurst Street at 10:13 p.m. Wednesday when he spotted a speeding black Cadillac, said Garden Grove Police Sgt. Luis Payan. The officer tried to pull the car over, but its driver wouldn’t comply, he said.
The Cadillac accelerated southbound Brookhurst Street and a chase ensued, ending about a mile away in the area of Garden Grove Boulevard and Brookhurst Street when the suspect crashed the Cadillac into a traffic signal, splitting the vehicle into two pieces, Payan said.
The driver, the vehicle’s sole occupant, was cut out of the wreckage by Garden Grove firefighters. Responsive and complaining of pain, he was transported to UC Irvine Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries, Payan said. No one else was injured.
Once discharged by the hospital, the suspect was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and felony evading, Payan said.
