The Orange County coroner’s office released the names Tuesday of two men who were killed when the driver of a red sedan that crashed into a wall on the Brookhurst Street offramp of the Garden Grove (22) Freeway and a good Samaritan who stopped to help were struck by a second vehicle.
The California Highway Patrol says the crash occurred around 1:55 a.m. Monday on the westbound Garden Grove Freeway. Witnesses reported the vehicle was being driven recklessly prior to the crash.
The victims — 19-year-old Bryce Campo of Stanton and 42-year-old Santiago Sanjuan-Mancilla also of Stanton — were pronounced dead at the scene, according to a Garden Grove Fire Department dispatcher and the coroner’s office. It’s unclear at this point which man was the driver and which was the good Samaritan.
The good Samaritan had stopped to assist the driver in the first crash when another vehicle struck them, a CHP officer said.
The CHP issued a SigAlert at 2:09 a.m. shutting down all westbound lanes of the Garden Grove Freeway from The City Drive. The HOV lane was reopened at 2:40 a.m. and the remaining lanes were reopened just after 5:20 a.m.
