A portion of Garden Grove was without power for a time overnight after a car driven by a 17-year-old boy crashed into a power pole.

The crash occurred around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday at 9301 Trask Ave., said Garden Grove police Sgt. Philip Schmidt.

Arriving officers found the driver inside and unresponsive. The vehicle was smoldering and power lines were down around the car with the power pole being completely sheared from the ground, Schmidt said.

Fearing the car would become engulfed in flames, the officers entered the vehicle through the rear door, and removed the driver, according to Schmidt.

The boy was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange, police said. A condition for the driver was not immediately available but his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

The outage affected about 200 customers, according to Southern California Edison. Power was restored by around daybreak.

Police shut down Trask Avenue in the crash area in both directions for the crash investigation and for crews to make repairs.
