Assemblyman Tyler Diep, R-Westminster, appears headed to defeat based on election results posted Wednesday.

For the first time since election night, last week, Diep slipped behind Democrat Diedre Nguyen, a Garden Grove City Councilwoman in the 72nd Assembly District.

Former Republican state Sen. Janet Nguyen, who was ousted in 2018, is bidding for a comeback and leads with 34.14% of the vote. Diedre Nguyen, no relation, is now in second, with 25.27% of the vote, with Diep in third, at 25.07%, followed by Bijan Mohseni with 15.52%.

Diedre Nguyen trailed Diep by just 17 votes Tuesday, but results posted Wednesday show her with 208 more votes than Diep.

Diep did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

If Diedre Nguyen can keep up her lead, she will square off with Janet Nguyen in November’s runoff election.

Meanwhile, Costa Mesa Mayor Katrina Foley, a Democrat, sent an email to her supporters Wednesday, conceding she had lost a chance at November’s runoff against state Sen. John Moorlach, R-Costa Mesa.

UC Irvine law professor Dave Min, a Democrat, edged out Foley for the chance to unseat Moorlach.

Moorlach leads with 47.88% of the vote, with Min at 27.64% and Foley at 24.48%.
