Residents were urged Tuesday to avoid contact with the ocean water in a stretch of Redondo Beach and Torrance due to discharge from a storm drain caused by a water main break in the area.
According to Los Angeles County Lifeguards, a storm drain located off Avenue E “began flowing heavily for approximately 5-10 minutes as a result of a fresh water main break in the city of Redondo Beach.”
“As a precaution lifeguards posted signs recommending swimmers avoid water contact in the area from Avenue C to (Vista Del Mar),” according to County Lifeguards. “Water quality testing will check for elevated bacteria levels.”
The beach was not formally closed, but people were being urged not to enter the water.
Torrance city officials said earlier there was no public health risk, and said the Redondo Beach water main break had caused a discharge of “sediment” into the ocean. The city issued a beach water quality advisory due to the discharge.
A pair of water main breaks occurred in Redondo Beach over the weekend. The breaks occurred in roughly the same vicinity near Prospect Avenue, closing a stretch of that street until Sunday.
