A brush fire that broke out Thursday north of Highway 371 in Anza quickly blackened roughly five acres but was not immediately threatening homes or other structures.
The blaze was reported at 11:10 a.m. in the area of Cary and Tripp Flats roads, on the southern edge of the San Bernardino National Forest, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
Two Cal Fire air tankers and two water-dropping helicopters reached the brusher before engine and hand crews, initiating a series of runs that slowed the flames, which were burning into the federal preserve, according to reports from the scene.
Light winds were reported in the area. As of noon, there was zero containment on the fire.
There was no immediate word on how it started.
