The Board of Supervisors signed off Tuesday on an agreement between the Riverside County Department of Public Social Services and the American Red Cross, clearing the way for the latter to continue providing assistance to the county during emergencies.

In a 5-0 vote without comment, the board authorized DPSS to enter into a five-year memorandum of understanding with the Red Cross, whose personnel will voluntarily implement a range of services during natural or other disasters.

“Our first priority is to ensure that people have a safe place to stay, food and emergency supplies,” according to a statement by the nonprofit posted to the board’s agenda. “Red Cross provides individual client services through casework to people with disaster-related needs, with particular attention to those who have experienced significant damage or loss of their homes.”

The Red Cross is active countywide, offering help in all imaginable scenarios, from single residential fires to major wildfires, floods, earthquakes and similar events.

Previously, the agency was directed to coordinate disaster assistance via the county Emergency Management Department, but under the new agreement, DPSS will be the principal point of contact.

“This MOU solidifies the existing working relationship between the county and the American Red Cross and further demonstrates each agency’s commitment to strengthen the preparedness and response efforts within the county,” according to a DPSS statement.

The agreement has no monetary value attached and can be cancelled at any time without cause.

As long as there are no significant amendments, DPSS officials will have the option to continue the compact beyond the current sunset date of June 30, 2026.
