A fire that erupted inside a multi-million-dollar warehouse in Riverside was quickly suppressed, minimizing damage, thanks to a sprinkler system, the fast action of workers and firefighters, officials said Friday.
The non-injury blaze broke out about 6:15 p.m. Thursday in the 7800 block of Lincoln Avenue, near Jefferson Street, according to the Riverside Fire Department.
Battalion Chief Tony Perna said four engine crews and two truck companies — numbering two dozen personnel — were sent to the location and encountered smoke billowing out of the east side of the 600,000-square-foot building.
“The on-scene commercial fire sprinklers were activated, and the water was going,” Perna said. “We were met with a working fire inside the structure.”
He said piles of foam products and other mattress materials were in the path of the blaze.
“The fire was held in check by the sprinkler system and the workers, who used a hose line in an attempt to extinguish the fire,” the battalion chief said. “Crews initiated fire attack and ensured the fire was extinguished.”
The blaze was completely knocked down about 6:40 p.m.
According to Perna, the fire caused an estimated $10,000 in damage, but most of the $51 million warehouse was not impacted.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
