Thunderstorms brought rare rainfall to the Coachella Valley Monday, including impressive totals to the eastern valley.
A low pressure system drifted in from Arizona and combined with monsoonal moisture lingering over the valley, according to the National Weather Service.
Thermal collected .44 inches of rain as of 11 a.m., more rain than the unincorporated community has seen in all of 2021 combined. In comparison, as of Sunday, Thermal received .31 inches of rain since January, the NWS reported. The previous daily standing record was .49 inches, which occurred on April 8, 2020.
In Indio, the NWS reported a whopping 1.49 inches at a single rain collection station on the north end of the city as of 11 a.m. However, the NWS reported this could be an outlier, as another NWS station in the city reported .37 inches of rain.
Indio last reported more than 1.5 inches of rain on Jan. 22, 2010, when 2 inches fell.
On the western side of the valley, the Palm Springs International Airport reported .46 inches of rain since midnight. Palm Springs last collected that much rain on April 8, 2020, when .46 inches also fell.
Forecasters said additional rainfall could fall on the valley floor on Monday, though it was unlikely.
Skies were clearing as of midday. The likelihood of thunderstorms was slated to substantially diminish on Tuesday, the NWS said.
