A 51-year-old man was killed when he apparently pulled in front of an oncoming big rig at a Meadowbrook intersection, authorities said Friday.
John Camp of Perris was fatally injured about 5 a.m. Thursday at Highway 74 and Mazie Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officer Mike Lassig said that Camp was in a 2002 Toyota Tundra pickup going northbound on Mazie and slowed as he approached a stop sign at the four-way intersection.
It was unclear whether the victim completely stopped, but according to Lassig, he “failed to observe” a tractor-trailer approaching from the west at 50 mph and continued north.
Lassig said that the 57-year-old operator of the semi was unable to bring the rig to a stop and struck the driver’s side of the Toyota.
“The pickup spun out of control and collided with a parked vehicle on Mazie before coming to a stop,” the CHP spokesman said.
Riverside County Fire Department personnel reached the location within a few minutes and pronounced Camp dead at the scene.
The trucker was not hurt, and there was no one in the parked car.
The investigation is ongoing, according to Lassig.
