A small vegetation fire damaged Imperial Irrigation District transmission poles, causing more than 2,200 customers in Indio to temporarily lose power Friday — but while service was restored to most of them, about 133 customers may be without electricity until Friday evening.

The utility alerted the public at 12:37 a.m. that 2,253 customers were impacted by the outage, and crews were dispatched to resolve the issue.

IID PIO Robert Schettler said the outage was caused by a vegetation fire that damaged approximately six transmission poles in the area. The damage disrupted the flow of power to the customers.

According to the utilities’ latest update, all but 133 customers in the area of Jefferson Street and Avenue 40 have had their power restored. The utility estimated that power will not be restored to the remaining 133 customers until around 8 p.m.

The IID serves electricity to more than 150,000 customers in parts of Riverside and San Diego counties, and all of Imperial County.
