A fire that broke out Friday in a Riverside funeral home caused significant damage to part of the structure but was stopped before reaching the main building.
The blaze was reported about 5:10 a.m. at the Akes Family Funeral Home, in the 9600 block of Magnolia Avenue, near Taft Street, according to the Riverside Fire Department.
Battalion Chief Pat Hopkins said that six engine crews and two truck companies were sent to the two-alarm fire and encountered flames raging in a rear one-story building attached to the two-story structure facing the street.
Firefighters “engaged in an aggressive interior fire attack” and prevented the flames from reaching the larger building, however, the entire structure sustained smoke damage, Hopkins said.
The blaze was under control by 5:30 a.m.
No staff were in the funeral home at the time.
Hopkins said the damage was estimated to be about $100,000.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
