A resident of a Riverside apartment complex suffered smoke inhalation while trying to put out a fire that broke out in a garage at the two-story building Sunday.

The first-alarm fire was reported at 12:57 p.m. in the 1400 block of Main Street, according to the Riverside Fire Department.

The fire caused $10,000 in damages but was knocked down by firefighters at 1:20 p.m., before it could spread to any of the housing units in the building.

Paramedics were called to the scene to treat a person who tried to use a fire extinguisher to douse the flames and suffered smoke inhalation, fire officials said.

“The cause of the fire was undetermined after investigation, but probable cause was improper discarded cigarette,” said Battalion Chief Mike Allen.

No firefighter injuries were reported.
