A woman jumped from a bridge onto Interstate 215 in Moreno Valley Thursday and was struck by a car, suffering fatal injuries, leading to a partial freeway shutdown.

The apparent suicide occurred about 4:40 a.m. on the northbound side of the freeway at Cactus Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officer Javier Navarro said that the woman, whose identity was not disclosed, had been spotted by motorists sitting or standing on the rails of the Cactus Avenue overpass, prompting calls to 911.

Navarro said that before CHP officers and Riverside County sheriff’s deputies could make contact with the woman, she leapt into lanes and was immediately hit by a vehicle. The driver stopped.

County fire paramedics reached the location within a few minutes and pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

No one in the car was injured.

CHP officers shut down all northbound lanes to conduct a preliminary investigation. A SigAlert was issued shortly after 5 a.m. because of the closure, which was lifted about 7 a.m., when all lanes were reopened.
