One man was killed and two children were injured in a two-vehicle crash in Palm Springs, authorities said Saturday.
The crash occurred around 7 p.m. Friday on northbound State Route 111 south of Overture Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP said 39-year-old Richard Mann of Beaumont was driving a 2018 Chevy Silverado and made an unsafe turning movement. The Chevy collided into the rear of a 2006 GMC Sierra that was parked on the right shoulder and was out of gas.
The Silverado then overturned and landed on its wheels in the dirt shoulder, where the GMC came to rest as well, according to the CHP, which added that both vehicles sustained major damage.
The GMC was occupied by a 10-year-old boy, a 12-year-old girl and a 45-year-old man. The man died at the scene, while the boy suffered major injuries and was airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center. The girl suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center.
Mann allegedly fled the scene after the crash and was later located at his residence. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, vehicular manslaughter, and hit-and-run causing injuries, according to authorities.
Anyone with information about the crash was encouraged to contact CHP Officer David Heidt at 760-772-5300.
