A motorist was killed in Indio Tuesday when his truck went off a four-lane road and plowed into trees.

The fatality occurred just before 8 a.m. on Varner Road, just west of Washington Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The agency said the truck, which appeared to be a construction vehicle, was going westbound on Varner went it veered off the roadway and slammed into a stand of tamarisk trees.

No other vehicles were involved.

CHP officers shut down Varner in both directions to conduct a preliminary investigation and clear the wreckage. As of 10:40 a.m., the closure remained in effect.
