A 28-year-old man who was fatally injured when the sedan he was riding in careened into a tree on a four-lane corridor in Riverside was identified Wednesday.
Tionte Eddings of Riverside was fatally injured shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday on Sycamore Canyon Boulevard, just south of Cottonwood Avenue, in the warehousing district adjacent to Interstate 215, according to the Riverside Police Department.
Sgt. Emilio Angulo said Eddings was in the front passenger seat of a 2017 Nissan 370Z being driven by a 29-year-old acquaintance.
Angulo said the motorist, identified only as a 29-year-old Moreno Valley man, was going southbound at a “high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle and collided into a tree.”
Riverside Fire Department paramedics reached the location within minutes and discovered Eddings and the motorist trapped in the wreckage. They were extricated moments later, with Eddings in grave condition, according to Angulo.
The victim was taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley, where he died less than an hour later.
The driver was treated at the same trauma center for minor injuries, the sergeant said.
He said the police department’s Major Accident Investigation Team was reviewing the circumstances of the crash.
“At this time, it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors,” the police spokesman said.
Anyone with information about the crash was asked to contact investigators at 951-826-8720.
