A 49-year-old man was struck and killed when he attempted to run across Highway 74 in traffic just east of Homeland, authorities said Monday.
Lefty Linscott of Homeland was fatally injured at 9:15 p.m. Friday near the intersection of Highway 74 and White Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officer Mike Lassig said Linscott was walking along the north shoulder of the highway when he began “running in a southerly direction” to cross the four-lane corridor.
“The pedestrian ran directly into the path of a 2016 Hyundai Elantra traveling in the No. 1 lane of the eastbound 74,” Lassig said.
The 32-year-old Hemet woman at the wheel of the compact sedan did not have time to swerve when the victim appeared in front of her.
“The front end of the Elantra collided into the man,” the CHP spokesman said, adding that the motorist immediately stopped.
Riverside County Fire Department paramedics reached the location within 15 minutes and pronounced Linscott dead at the scene.
The Hyundai driver, whose identity was not disclosed, was questioned by officers but not arrested.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information was asked to contact the CHP Temecula office at 951-466-4300.
